Working with DePierro Video Productions on a documentary describing the development of the tactics of dogfighting from WWI to Korea, including interviews with aircraft designers & combat veteran pilots... Home Run Pictures needed to create visuals for two real-life dogfights to intercut with the interviews from the pilots that flew the missions during WWII and the Korean War.
Over four minutes of animated sequences were produced depicting two P40 fighters encountering three Japanese Zeros over the Pacific Ocean... and two F86 jets running into a squadron of 16 Migs over North Korea. Various scenes, external and in-cockpit views, were created to fully visualize the classic aerial confrontations.
Animators worked from talking heads of the pilots as they described their experiences to create storyboards, gather timing and possible camera viewpoints. Also an aerial combat expert was video taped as he explained the maneuvers described using small model planes and hand drawn diagrams. Rough motion tests were then edited together for offline editing and eventually replaced with the final fully-rendered animations.
The resulting visuals brought to life the colorful stories of these classic aerial dogfighting events that the WWII and Korean War pilots were recalling from memory. The program aired on The Discovery Channel and was available on video tape through Aviation Week Magazine.
